In September 2024, The Supreme Court of India directed striking doctors in Kolkata, West Bengal, to return to work by September 10, following a tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College where a trainee physician was raped and murdered, sparking widespread protests and severely disrupting the state's healthcare services. The doctors have been on strike since August 9, 2024, demanding better security and transparency in the investigation of the crime.

Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the urgency of resuming medical services, stating the protest must not continue at the cost of patient lives. West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attributes the strike to political motives, complicating the situation. She has urged the doctors to resume duties and promised enhanced hospital facilities.
